What counts as a plumbing emergency?
Water escaping inside, sewage coming up, or a building left without water, gas or hot water. Here is what that looks like in practice:
- A flexi hose under a vanity or behind the washer has split, and water is coming through the ceiling of the flat below.
- Sewage welling up through a shower grate, possibly in the neighbours' terraces too.
- The taps have gone dry, or a pipe has split inside a wall.
- The cylinder is leaking from its base or only giving cold.
- You can smell gas. Follow the safety steps on our gas leak detection page first.
Stopping the water before we arrive
While you wait, these steps limit the damage. Take them in this order:
- 01
Close the main stopcock
It is usually near the front boundary or under a ground-floor sink. Seized? Move on.
- 02
Isolate the hot water side
Closing the cold valve on the unit stops the tank emptying through the split.
- 03
Open the lowest tap you have
Water left in the pipes then runs out there rather than through a ceiling.
- 04
Lift things clear
Rugs, cartons and power boards come up off the floor on the low side of the leak.
Splits you can't see. Some multi-storey terraces still carry galvanised water risers inside their party walls, and a split in one soaks the masonry before a stain shows. We pin the pipe's position before cutting, so the old plaster is opened once in the right spot.
How the night call runs
A split hose in an upstairs flat and a choked terrace sewer run through the same four steps:
- 01
Ring or send the form
Call (02) 4063 1093 or use the form to explain the fault. We ask enough to bring the right equipment the first time.
- 02
A fixed price first
A plumber inspects the job and names a fixed figure up front. Nothing gets started until you give the go-ahead.
- 03
Isolate, stop, make safe
Water or gas is shut off, the leak or choke is contained, and everything is stable before repairs are priced.
- 04
Covered for a year
Every job carries our 365-day warranty on all work. If something we did isn't right, ring the same number.
What drives the price of an after-hours call?
We provide up-front, honest quotes that will always match the final price, should you decide to go ahead.
On an emergency job, four things set the number:
- The clock Anything outside business hours, public holidays included, is charged at the after-hours rate.
- The fault Changing a flexi hose is quick. A rusted riser buried in double-brick has to be opened up with care.
- The material Clay sewer, galvanised steel and copper are each repaired differently.
- Getting in Hill streets with little parking, and strata keys or lift access, add time.
A choke or break in the public sewer outside your boundary is Hunter Water's pipe, so it never appears in our quote.

When We're Not the Right Call
Water gushing from the street rather than your property means a burst Hunter Water main, so report it to them. If the gas smell is strongest at the meter, ring the gas network's emergency line before us.
What Customers Say
I commend them for their very fast and efficient service when we had a burst pipe.
After the Emergency Is Over
Once the immediate fault is made safe, the follow-up sits with one of these:
Drains
A CCTV drain inspection shows why a sewer choked, and the fix sits under blocked drains.
Gas
A faulty cooktop or heater goes to our gas fitting team.
Strata
Damage across several units is documented through our strata and real estate process.
Hidden leaks
A damp patch with no obvious cause is traced by water leak detection.
Urgent questions, answered plainly
Do you charge a call-out fee in The Hill for emergency callouts?
It costs nothing to get us out to your door (excluding after-hours). At night and on weekends a separate rate applies, and you are told it on the phone before a plumber sets off, so the full price is known while you decide.
My sewer is backing up on a Saturday night. Can it wait until Monday?
No. Where one old sewer serves a whole terrace row, a choke downhill backs waste up into every home on it, and it keeps rising while the toilets are used. We clear shared lines at night and put a camera through before leaving, so the clear pipe is on record.
A hose burst in the apartment above mine. Who pays for the plumbing work?
Who pays is settled by the owners corporation and its insurer, not by us. We help by leaving evidence: pictures of the failed hose and the wet ceilings, the valve we shut, and an itemised invoice, sent to the strata manager and both owners.
How fast can you get to The Hill?
We don't give arrival times. Steep streets and scarce parking make any promise like that unreliable. We are Available 24/7, a person answers, and once you have described the fault the job is booked.
