Blocked Sewer The Hill

A blocked sewer in The Hill shows up as toilets, showers and gullies backing up together, and your plumber in The Hill clears it with the jetter or eel for a fixed price agreed first. The camera runs before and after. Ring (02) 4063 1093, or see the blocked drains hub for smaller chokes.

Plumber repairing an exposed pipe in a trench

How do you know the sewer is choking?

Signs the trouble is in the sewer rather than one fixture:

  • The toilet bowl bubbles, or its water level drops then rises
  • Shower and tub both holding water at the same time
  • A rotten smell at the floor grate or yard gully
  • Damp ground over where the pipe runs

When the row shares a line. Some heritage terrace rows drain through one old sewer, so a single plug stops several homes at once. Treat that as urgent, and see our emergency plumber steps for what to do while you wait.

What does clearing the line involve?

A sewer clear goes through four stages:

  1. 01

    Look

We open the inspection point and send the camera in to find the plug and see what it is.

  2. 02

    Break it

Soft fat gets the jetter; roots or hard debris get the eel's cutter.

  3. 03

    Look again

The camera goes back in to confirm flow and film the clay.

  4. 04

    Hand over

You keep the video and the invoice at the price you approved.

Roots on the video? That is tree root removal. Grease caked along the pipe calls for drain jetting.

What drives the price of a sewer clear?

For a sewer, the price hangs on:

  • Metres of sewer A line serving a whole row is longer than one home's branch.
  • The plug Paper and fat clear fast; a root ball takes the cutter and more time.
  • The opening An inspection point in a back lane or on strata common property needs arranging first.
  • When Nights and weekends carry the after-hours rate.

One ridge, one repeating fault

Old pipes on steep grades

The Hill was laid out in 1823, and its Victorian terraces still discharge through 1800s clay that drops steeply toward the harbour. Where each line eases off near the bottom, the flow slows and waste settles.

Ground that keeps creeping

Slow movement of the hillside has pushed those clay joints out of line, and each step inside the pipe holds back a little more waste.

One choke, several homes

Census figures put the suburb at 963 dwellings, 61.3 per cent of them flats, and a block of flats drains through one shared stack. A plug below that stack backs up every unit above it until the pipe is open.

When We're Not the Right Call

The public sewer

A plug in Hunter Water's main is for their crews to clear, so report it to them.

Rainwater backing up

That is a separate pipe system, covered under stormwater drains.

A cracked sewer section

A clay length that keeps catching waste needs pipe relining, not another clear.

A shared building

If the sewer serves a block of units, access and reporting follow our strata and real estate process.

Answers on a rising sewer line

How do I know the sewer is blocked and not just one drain?

Look at what else is struggling. If the shower fills while the laundry tub drains, or the toilet bubbles as the basin empties, the plug sits in the sewer those fixtures share. A foul smell at the yard gully points the same way.

Can you clear a shared sewer line in a The Hill terrace row?

Yes. Where several terraces share one clay sewer, we open the nearest inspection point and clear the length that serves them all. The video afterwards pins down which stretch held the blockage, which helps neighbours settle any repair costs between them.

Does a cleared sewer on The Hill stay clear?

That turns on what the video shows. A fat or paper plug in a sound pipe is gone once cleared. Roots near the cathedral's figs can grow back into loose joints, and a cracked length keeps snagging waste until it is relined or replaced.

What if the blockage is outside my boundary in The Hill?

Past your boundary the sewer belongs to Hunter Water, and clearing it is their job. If our camera finds the plug out there, you report it to them with our video as evidence.
