Why do drains choke on streets this steep?
Gravity helps on a slope, but only while the pipe keeps falling. Waste travels fast off the ridge, then drops out of the flow wherever a line levels off before the main, and that flat stretch is where the blockage builds.
Old clay makes it worse. The Victorian terraces still send waste through nineteenth-century clay pipe, and slow ground movement has pushed its joints out of line. Each lip or gap catches paper and gives roots a way in.
- Flat sections near the bottom of a steep line
- Cracked or bellied earthenware with shifted joints that snag waste on every pass
- Fig and street tree roots tracking the damp pipe trench downhill
- Soil creep shearing old pipe where it crosses filled ground
- Cooking fat and soap scum lining kitchen branches
How a drain gets cleared here
The tool depends on what is in the pipe, so the van carries a jetter, an electric eel and a camera to each drain job.
- 01
Locate
A pipe locator follows the drain downhill and marks where the blockage sits.
- 02
Clear
The jetter scours fat and fine roots off the pipe wall with water alone, and the eel's cutting head breaks through anything the jet can't.
- 03
Film
A camera then runs the cleared pipe, so a crack or sag shows up now rather than as the next blockage.
The Hill Drain Services
Footage of the inside of the pipe, before and after work. It proves a clear worked and shows any crack before you pay to fix it.
Water at jetting pressure scours grease, sludge and root fibres off the pipe wall. The clean that lasts longest on old earthenware with rough joints.
A heritage sewer shared by a terrace row, where one choke backs up several homes. We clear it, then film it before we pack up.
Charged lines and downhill runs that back up in east coast lows. The drains that keep rainwater out of homes on the plunging streets.
A new liner inside a cracked clay pipe, sealed from within. The fix that repairs damaged drains under heritage masonry without opening it up.
For pipes near the cathedral figs, roots trimmed flush with the eel and the entry joints shown on video.
How much does clearing a blocked drain cost?
We provide up-front, honest quotes that will always match the final price, should you decide to go ahead.
What shifts the number from job to job:
- Where the opening is A gully in an open courtyard is quick to reach; one behind a terrace with only a narrow back lane is not.
- Pipe type Old clay needs gentler pressure and more care than PVC.
- How deep the fault sits Downslope runs on this ridge can be well buried by the time they reach the boundary.
- Time of day Night and weekend work carries the after-hours rate.

When We're Not the Right Call
A blockage in the public sewer beyond your boundary is Hunter Water's to clear, so report it to them. Where a slipping retaining wall has crushed the pipe, the wall is a builder's rebuild before we lay new drain.

Blocked drain questions from the ridge
Is it the sewer, or just one sink blocked?
If only one basin is slow, look at its trap or the branch pipe under that room. When the shower, toilet and laundry all back up together, or the toilet gurgles as the washer empties, the choke is further down in the sewer. The camera confirms which.
Can you clear drains under The Hill's old terraces without digging?
Clearing needs no digging at all, since the jetter and eel go in through an existing opening. Repairing cracked clay under a terrace can be done by relining from inside, as long as the pipe is still round. A caved-in length is the exception, and you see it on video before anything is opened.
Do cleared drains on this ridge block again?
They can. The big figs and street trees near the cathedral send roots along damp trenches and back into loose clay joints. After each clear we film the pipe, so you know whether the joints are sound or a reline would stop the roots returning.
Is stormwater backing up in The Hill an emergency?
It can be. The Hill averages 1141mm of rain a year, and heavy bursts in an east coast low pour straight down these steep streets. If water is getting inside, ring us at any hour and we clear the stormwater line.
